Carrickfinn Cottage

After a warm welcome by Cathal and Elma we enjoyed a brilliant week in the lovely old school at Carrickfinn with our son, his wife and grandchildren. The school has been carefully and cleverly converted to offer affordable high-quality accommodation. Perfect weather enabled us to explore the pristine local beaches all within easy walking distance of the school. The week’s highlights also included sightings of fox, hares, deer and bird life at Carnboy Loch. We even managed to kayak out to Innsihunny to explore its white sand beaches. We will return.

Come here twice a year since 2011. Beautiful, peaceful bliss. The cottage is immaculate and great base be it summer or winter. Cathal and Elma are the perfect hosts who could not be more helpful. Sometimes hard to articulate in a review something as great as Carrickfinn cottage. I’m typing this in front of roaring turf fire as February wind and rain lash the windows- heaven! Due to come back again in the summer for a totally different (but equally great) summer holiday when we once again will visit the pristine (and quiet!) local beaches.

This is a piece of heaven on earth. The cottage has everything one needs. We were so fortunate to have the beautiful weather & we were able to make the most of all the beautiful beaches so close to hand. Elma & Cathal were so welcoming & it felt like coming home even though this was our first meeting. It certainly won’t be the last! It’s such a lovely area to unwind & feel the peace & have time to reflect. Feeling homesick! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

We have just returned from The Old Schoolhouse after our fifth consecutive stay. It has always been spotlessly clean and has everything anyone would need for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. We particularly enjoyed lighting the turf provided for evening fires when it became cooler at night. The owners, Cathal and Elma, are super hosts and fonts of information- nothing is too much bother.
There are lots of places to walk in this very scenic area, both countryside and the beaches.We especially like Carrickfinn blue flag beach which is close to Donegal Airport (about 5 minutes in the car or 40 minutes walking) where we enjoyed homemade scones each day!! If you enjoy nature- we had a pheasant walking along the wall beside us. We also saw leverets playing close by our car and last year heard both a cuckoo and a corncrake.
This is the place to relax – a little piece of Heaven. We have already booked for next year!!
